A trip to Oklahoma City to visit relatives for the holidays could be just that — a roadtrip.
The state’s roads are still getting used to a new system of roads and lanes that is designed to handle the increasing number of vehicles on the road.
In Oklahoma, you’ll be able to drive on two different types of highways — one with a dedicated lane, and one with two lanes.
Traffic can also use the designated lanes and slow down for a few seconds.
But that won’t stop some drivers from slowing down for no reason at all.
Oklahoma State University traffic safety researcher Dr. Jim Roper says that’s because people tend to drive slowly.
“There’s no way to get a driver to slow down,” Roper said.
“It’s a very inefficient mode of transportation.”
Roper says the new system will increase your chances of having a successful trip.
Roper is working with a private company called NOLA Driveways, which is designing and developing the system in partnership with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation.NOLA Roadways says the technology will improve the speed of people and vehicles moving through Oklahoma City.
The goal is to get people to slow to a walk, then to a stop and then to turn around and move again, said NOLS vice president of marketing and communications Steve Dyer.
Riders will also be able take advantage of this new system in a few more ways.
Drivers won’t have to slow for traffic lights.
Instead, drivers can pull over to let traffic clear, or stop at a red light.
When a driver wants to leave, he can choose to use a special traffic light or slow down, he said.
When a driver does slow down to allow traffic to pass, he or she can use a speed-limiting device like a speed limiter, Roper explained.
The new system is expected to make it easier for people to enjoy a road journey, Rimmer said.
